Hash Generator

Generate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 hashes.

How to use Hash Generator

  1. Enter text or pick a file

Type text, or switch to File Hash mode to checksum any file.

  2. Get every hash at once

    MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, SHA-3 and RIPEMD-160 are computed together. Add a key for HMAC.

  3. Copy or compare

Copy any hash, or use Compare mode to check whether two hashes match.

How to generate MD5, SHA-256 and other hashes

A hash function turns any input into a short, fixed-length fingerprint. The same input always gives the same hash, and a single changed byte gives a completely different one. Hash Generator computes all common algorithms at once for text or files, locally in your browser.

Verifying downloads

Software sites often publish a SHA-256 checksum next to a download. Hash the file you received in File Hash mode, then paste your result and the published value into Compare mode: if they match, the file was not corrupted or tampered with on the way.

Which algorithm to use

Not all hashes are equal:

  • SHA-256 and SHA-512: the standard choice today for checksums and integrity.
  • SHA-3: the newest standard, with a different internal design from SHA-2.
  • MD5 and SHA-1: fine for spotting accidental corruption, but broken for security; do not use them to protect anything.
  • RIPEMD-160: mainly seen in cryptocurrency address formats.

HMAC and passwords

Enter a secret key to compute HMAC versions, which prove a message came from someone who knows the key; webhooks from services like Stripe and GitHub are signed this way. Plain hashes are not suitable for storing passwords; use a slow algorithm such as bcrypt or Argon2 for that. All hashing happens on your device.
