Character Limits for Every Social Platform (2026)

· 3 min read

Every platform counts differently, and most hide part of a post behind a 'more' link long before the hard limit. This guide lists the limits for the main platforms and, just as importantly, how much of a post people actually see in their feed.

Platforms change their limits from time to time, so treat this as a checklist and confirm in the platform's own composer before a big launch.

Posts and captions

The maximum length of a post or caption on each platform:

  • X (Twitter): 280 characters for free accounts. X Premium subscribers can write long posts of up to 25,000 characters. Every link counts as 23 characters.
  • Instagram: 2,200 characters per caption, with about 125 visible before the more link.
  • TikTok: up to 4,000 characters when posting in the app, or 2,200 through most scheduling tools. Only about the first 100 show in the feed.
  • LinkedIn: 3,000 characters per post, with roughly the first 210 shown before see more.
  • Facebook: over 60,000 characters, but only about the first 470 show before see more.
  • Threads: 500 characters.
  • Bluesky: 300 characters.
  • Mastodon: 500 characters on most servers, though some servers allow more.

Profiles, titles and descriptions

Shorter fields that are easy to overrun:

  • Instagram bio: 150 characters.
  • X bio: 160 characters.
  • LinkedIn headline: 220 characters.
  • YouTube video title: 100 characters, and 5,000 for the description.
  • Pinterest Pin title: 100 characters, and 500 for the description.

Search results and text messages

Two limits that matter outside social media:

  • Google page titles: about 60 characters before they are cut off in search results. The real limit is a pixel width, so wide letters run out sooner.
  • Meta descriptions: about 150 to 160 characters.
  • SMS text messages: 160 characters per message, or 70 when the message contains an emoji or other special characters. Longer texts are split into several messages.

Write for the cut-off, not the limit

The hard limit rarely matters. What decides whether people engage is the first line before the feed cuts it off: about 100 characters on TikTok, 125 on Instagram and 210 on LinkedIn. Put the point of the post, the hook or the question, in that space, and keep hashtags and links for later in the caption.

Count before you post

  1. Paste your draft

Open Character Counter and paste or type your post.

  2. Pick a platform limit

Presets for X (280), Instagram (2,200), LinkedIn (3,000), meta descriptions (160) and SMS (160) show how much room is left.

  3. Check words too

For limits set in words rather than characters, Word Counter gives the word count, reading time and most repeated words. The words per page guide converts word counts into pages.

Why counts sometimes differ

Emojis and some accented or non-Latin characters can count as two characters on X and in text messages, because of how they are encoded. Line breaks count as characters on most platforms. If a post is right at the limit, leave a few characters spare.

Frequently asked questions

What is the character limit on X for free accounts?

280 characters per post. Subscribers to X Premium can write longer posts of up to 25,000 characters.

How long can an Instagram caption be?

2,200 characters, but only about the first 125 show before the more link, so lead with the important part.

How many characters should a meta description be?

Aim for 150 to 160 characters. Google cuts longer descriptions off in search results.
