How to Sign a PDF on Your iPhone or Android Phone

· 3 min read

Someone emails you a form to sign and you are away from a computer. You do not need a printer, a scanner or a special app. A phone browser is enough to add a real signature, today's date and your details to a PDF, and send it straight back.

This guide uses Sign PDF, which works in Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android and never uploads your document: it is opened and saved on your phone.

Before you start: get the PDF onto your phone

If the PDF arrived by email, open the attachment and use the share button to save it to Files (iPhone) or tap download (Android). On iPhone it will usually land in Files, in the Downloads folder or On My iPhone. On Android it goes to the Downloads folder. PDFs from WhatsApp, Slack or Teams can be saved the same way.

Step by step: sign the PDF

  1. Open Sign PDF and choose your file

Visit Sign PDF in your browser, tap the upload area and pick the document from Files or Downloads. It opens full screen.

  2. Create your signature

Tap Signature, then Draw and sign with your finger. Turning the phone sideways gives you more room. You can also Type your name in a handwriting style, or Upload a photo of your signature on paper; the white background is removed automatically.

  3. Place it

Tap the spot on the page where the signature belongs, then drag and resize it to fit the line. Use the + and - zoom buttons if the signature line is small.

  4. Fill in the rest

Add today's date with Date, type your name or address with Text, and use the check mark for tick boxes. Everything you type is saved as real text.

  5. Download and send

Tap download. On iPhone, Safari saves the signed file to Files, in Downloads. From there, share it back by email or chat.

Tips for a signature that looks right

  • Sign slowly and a little larger than you would on paper; the signature is scaled down when you place it.
  • Use a stylus if you have one; it gives a more natural line than a fingertip.
  • Signing many pages? Place your initials once, select them and press All pages to copy them to the same spot on every page.
  • Your signatures are remembered only while the tab is open, so you can reuse them across several documents in one session.

Is a signature made on a phone legally valid?

What you create is a simple electronic signature. In many countries, including under the US ESIGN Act and the EU eIDAS regulation, simple electronic signatures are legally recognized for most everyday agreements such as rental forms, consent forms, offer letters and delivery notes. Some documents, such as certain property, court or notarized papers, require a qualified signature with identity verification, which only a certified e-signature provider can give. If in doubt, ask the person who sent you the document what they accept.

Have a paper document instead?

Photograph the pages flat, in good light, turn the photos into a PDF with JPG to PDF, then sign that PDF as above. To change text in the document rather than just sign it, use Edit PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install an app to sign a PDF on my phone?

No. Sign PDF runs in Safari, Chrome and other mobile browsers. There is nothing to install and no account to create.

Is my document uploaded anywhere?

No. The PDF is opened, signed and saved entirely on your phone. Neither the document nor your signature is sent to a server.

Where does the signed PDF go on iPhone?

Safari saves downloads to the Files app, in the Downloads folder by default. Open it there and use the share button to email it.
