How to convert a Unix timestamp to a date
Unix time counts the seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970. It is how most databases, APIs and log files store moments in time, which is compact for computers but meaningless to people. Unix Timestamp Converter translates in both directions and shows the current timestamp live.
Seconds or milliseconds?
Unix timestamps are traditionally in seconds (10 digits for current dates, such as 1767225600), while JavaScript and many APIs use milliseconds (13 digits). The converter detects which one you pasted: up to 10 digits is treated as seconds, and anything longer as milliseconds.
Time zones
A timestamp is the same instant everywhere; only its display changes. Results are shown in your local time zone and in UTC, EST, PST, IST, GMT and JST side by side, which helps when reading server logs recorded in UTC or coordinating across countries.
Good to know
A few facts that save debugging time:
- Timestamp 0 is 1 January 1970, 00:00:00 UTC, which is why broken dates often show up as 1970.
- Signed 32-bit timestamps run out on 19 January 2038, the so-called Year 2038 problem.
- Unix time ignores leap seconds, so every day is exactly 86,400 seconds.
