ImmiAccount Attachments: 5 MB Limit and File Rules

By · · 3 min read

Australian visa and citizenship applications in ImmiAccount ask you to attach supporting documents: passports, birth certificates, bank statements, employment references, relationship evidence. ImmiAccount has firm rules on file size and type, and once a file is attached it cannot be removed, so it pays to get each one right first.

These are the rules from the Department of Home Affairs help page on attaching documents, and how to prepare files that pass them, privately on your own device.

The official attachment rules

From the Home Affairs ImmiAccount help page Attach documents (checked on 10 October 2026).

  • Visa applications: files up to 5 MB each, with the extensions bmp, dcm, doc, docx, dot, gif, jpg, pdf, png, ppt, pptx, rtf, txt, xls or xlsx.
  • Compressed files (such as zip) and encrypted PDF files cannot be accepted.
  • For documents with more than one page, provide the pages in a single PDF.
  • Scan each document separately, include both sides, and scan in colour if the original is in colour.
  • Citizenship applications: images are preferred as jpg, with the file size limited to 500 KB.
  • There is a limit to the number of files per applicant, and attached files cannot be deleted.

Step by step

  1. Unlock encrypted statements

Bank and super statements often arrive as password protected PDFs, which ImmiAccount rejects. If you know the password, save an unprotected copy with Unlock PDF.

  2. One PDF per document

Combine the pages of each document, both sides included, into one PDF with JPG to PDF, or join existing PDFs with Merge PDF. Keep different documents in separate files.

  3. Stay under 5 MB

If a combined PDF is too big, shrink the page images first with Compress Image in Target size mode, about 400 KB per page, then combine them again.

  4. Citizenship images under 500 KB

For citizenship applications, open Compress Image, choose Target size and click the 500 KB preset. The tool keeps the best quality that fits and outputs a jpg, as the Department prefers.

Documents not in English

The same help page says every document that is not in English must come with an English translation, provided together with the original. Scan or photograph both, and where possible scan the original document rather than a photocopy. Combining the original and its translation into one PDF with Merge PDF, translation straight after the pages it covers, keeps them together and saves one of your limited attachment slots.

Because attachments cannot be deleted

Check every file before you select Attach: open the PDF, scroll through all pages, and make sure nothing is cut off or upside down. Use a clear file name. Since you cannot remove a wrong file and there is a limit on the number of files, a quick check saves a lot of trouble.

Keep your documents private

Visa applications involve passports, finances and family details. Unlock PDF, Merge PDF, JPG to PDF and Compress Image run in your browser, so none of those files are uploaded anywhere except to ImmiAccount itself.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ImmiAccount attachment size limit?

5 MB per file for visa applications. For citizenship applications the Department prefers jpg images limited to 500 KB.

Why was my PDF rejected by ImmiAccount?

Encrypted (password protected) PDFs and compressed files such as zip cannot be accepted. Remove the password from a copy and upload the PDF itself.

How do I attach a document with several pages?

Put all pages, including both sides, into a single PDF with JPG to PDF or Merge PDF, then attach that one file.

Are my documents uploaded to Drible?

No. These tools run in your browser, so your documents stay on your device until you attach them in ImmiAccount.
