Why 500 KB?

500 KB is where multi-page documents start to fit: three or four scanned pages at a readable resolution, or a long typed report with photos. It is the limit for supporting documents on a regular Indian visa application, and a common cap on job and university portals.

The tool keeps your pages, text and links, and only resamples the images inside the PDF. It starts at 150 DPI and steps down until the file comes in under 500 KB, so a document that fits easily is barely touched.

How the target size works

  • Our server compresses the PDF with Ghostscript at a series of settings, from 150 DPI images down to 40 DPI, and keeps the sharpest one under 500 KB.
  • Only the images inside the PDF are resampled. Pages, text, fonts and links are kept, so typed text stays sharp at any setting.
  • If nothing fits, you get the smallest version it could make and a suggestion for getting the rest of the way, such as keeping only the pages you need.
  • The file is deleted from the server as soon as the result is sent back to you, and nothing is kept or logged.
