Why 100 KB?

100 KB is tight for a PDF. A single page from a phone scanner app is often 1 to 3 MB, because each page is stored as a full resolution photo. Text costs almost nothing; the scanned image is what has to shrink.

This page sets the target for you. Our server re-encodes the page images at a series of settings, from sharp to small, and returns the sharpest one that comes in under 100 KB. Text and vector graphics are left as they are, so typed text stays crisp at any setting.

How the target size works

  • Our server compresses the PDF with Ghostscript at a series of settings, from 150 DPI images down to 40 DPI, and keeps the sharpest one under 100 KB.
  • Only the images inside the PDF are resampled. Pages, text, fonts and links are kept, so typed text stays sharp at any setting.
  • If nothing fits, you get the smallest version it could make and a suggestion for getting the rest of the way, such as keeping only the pages you need.
  • The file is deleted from the server as soon as the result is sent back to you, and nothing is kept or logged.
