JEE Main Photo and Signature Size: KB and Format

By · · 5 min read

The JEE (Main) application asks for a live photograph taken with your camera and a set of scanned files: a passport size photograph, your signature, your Class 10 certificate or marksheet, and a few others depending on your category. Each file has a minimum and a maximum size, and the portal refuses anything outside the range.

Below are the exact limits from the NTA Information Bulletin, and a simple way to prepare every file on your own device. The tools linked here run in your browser, so your photo and certificates are not uploaded anywhere until you upload them to the NTA portal yourself.

The official upload limits

These come from the JEE (Main) 2026 Information Bulletin published by the National Testing Agency (checked on 10 October 2026). NTA publishes a new bulletin every year and the numbers can change, so check the bulletin for your session before you apply. For the 2026 January session, the form opened on 31 October 2025.

  • Photograph: recent passport size photo in colour, with 80 percent of the image showing your face (without a mask), ears visible, on a white background. JPG or JPEG, between 10 KB and 200 KB.
  • Signature: JPG or JPEG, between 10 KB and 100 KB, clearly legible.
  • Class 10 or equivalent certificate or marksheet: PDF, between 50 KB and 300 KB.
  • Identity proof (only if you verify your identity by a method other than Aadhaar or DigiLocker): JPG or JPEG, between 10 KB and 200 KB.
  • Disability or UDID certificate (if applicable): PDF, between 50 KB and 300 KB.
  • Live photograph: captured with your webcam or phone camera inside the form, against a light coloured background with proper lighting and 80 percent of your face visible, including ears, without a mask.

Step by step: photograph and signature

  1. Start with a clear photo

Use a recent colour photo against a plain white wall, in daylight, with no shadows on your face. If your phone saves HEIC files, convert them first with HEIC to JPG.

  2. Crop so your face fills the frame

Open Crop Image and use the 2:3 preset or Freeform. NTA asks for 80 percent face, so crop much tighter than a normal passport photo: from just above the hair to just below the chin, with both ears inside the frame.

  3. Resize to a sensible size

NTA does not set pixel dimensions, only a KB range. Open Resize Image and set the photo to about 350 x 450 pixels. For the signature, crop it tightly on white paper and resize it to about 400 pixels wide.

  4. Check the KB

Open Compress to 200 KB for the photo and Compress to 100 KB for the signature. Each finds the best JPG quality under the limit; tick the minimum box and enter 10 so neither file comes out too small.

Step by step: the Class 10 PDF

The certificate PDF has a minimum of 50 KB as well as a maximum of 300 KB, and both limits catch people out. A heavily compressed scan can come in under 50 KB, while a raw phone photo turned into a PDF is often several megabytes.

  1. Capture the whole document

Scan it, or photograph it flat in good light from directly above so the text is straight and sharp.

  2. Crop and resize

Crop to the edges of the paper with Crop Image, then resize it to about 1400 pixels wide with Resize Image.

  3. Compress to about 120 to 250 KB

Use Compress Image and check that every mark and date is still readable at full size.

  4. Convert to PDF

Turn the image into a PDF with JPG to PDF. The PDF ends up only slightly larger than the image, so a 120 to 250 KB image gives a PDF inside the 50 to 300 KB window. If the PDF is under 50 KB, go back and compress less.

Why the live photo matters too

The live photo is compared with your records, so it should look like the scanned photograph you upload. Use the same kind of light background and do not wear a mask, cap or dark glasses. If your computer has no webcam, the form shows a QR code that opens the camera step on your phone.

NTA also asks candidates to keep their Aadhaar details up to date with a recent photograph, because identity checks lean on it.

Common reasons uploads fail

  • The face is too small in the photo, because the crop was a normal passport crop instead of 80 percent face.
  • The file is PNG or HEIC instead of JPG.
  • The certificate PDF is under 50 KB after aggressive compression.
  • Signature and photograph uploaded in each other's place.
  • Blurry or dark scans that fail the legibility check later.

Frequently asked questions

What is the JEE Main photo size in KB?

Between 10 KB and 200 KB, in JPG or JPEG format, according to the JEE (Main) 2026 Information Bulletin.

What is the JEE Main signature size?

Between 10 KB and 100 KB, in JPG or JPEG format.

What pixel size should the JEE Main photo be?

NTA only sets a KB range, not pixel dimensions. About 350 x 450 pixels with your face filling 80 percent of the image works well.

My Class 10 PDF is too small. How do I make it bigger?

Use a larger image with less compression before converting it with JPG to PDF. A 1400 pixel wide image of 120 to 250 KB gives a PDF above the 50 KB minimum.

Are my documents uploaded when I use these tools?

No. Crop, Resize, Compress Image and JPG to PDF all run in your browser, so your files stay on your device.
