How to convert HEIC photos to JPG

iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC by default. The format keeps quality high at about half the file size of a JPG, but plenty of software still does not open it: older Windows photo viewers, many websites, job and government upload forms, and some printing services. Converting to JPG makes the photo work everywhere.

Private by design

The conversion runs in your browser using libheif, an open-source HEIC decoder compiled to WebAssembly and served from our own site. Your photos are never uploaded, which matters for personal pictures, ID scans and documents photographed with a phone.

JPG or PNG?

Pick the format by what you will do next:

  • JPG: the right choice for sharing, uploading and printing. At 90 percent quality the result looks identical to the original for almost every photo, and files stay small.
  • PNG: lossless, so files are several times larger. Choose it if you will edit the photo further and want to avoid re-compressing it.

Stop your iPhone saving HEIC

If you need JPG all the time, you can change the default on the phone itself: open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Existing photos stay HEIC, and photos shared from the Photos app are often converted automatically, but files copied over a cable or through cloud storage usually stay HEIC, which is where this tool helps.

Live Photos and bursts

A HEIC file can hold more than one image, for example the frames of a burst. The converter exports the main image, which is the photo you see in the Photos app. The video part of a Live Photo is stored separately and is not part of the HEIC file.

After converting

Upload forms often have a size limit too. If the JPG is still too large, shrink it with Compress Image or Resize Image, and see the guide to reducing image size in KB for exact limits. To put several converted photos into one document, use JPG to PDF.
