How to add text to an image

Captions, labels, quotes, prices and watermarks all start with putting words on a picture. Add Text to Image gives you a simple editor in your browser: click to add text, style it, drag it where you want and download the result, with no design software needed.

Styling your text

Each text element has its own font, size and color, so you can combine a bold headline with a smaller caption. Fonts include Arial, Helvetica, Georgia, Times New Roman, Courier New, Impact and Comic Sans MS. Turn on Text Background to put a colored box with adjustable opacity behind the words.

Making text readable on photos

Busy photos can swallow text. A few tricks help:

  • Use white text on dark areas and dark text on light areas.
  • Add a semi-transparent text background when the photo has no calm area.
  • Choose a heavy font like Impact or Arial at a large size for thumbnails that will be seen small.
  • Keep it short: a few words read faster than a sentence.

Private and free

The editor runs in your browser, so the image is never uploaded, and there is no watermark on the result. For the classic top and bottom meme style, try Meme Maker instead.
