How to convert images between JPG, PNG and WebP

Different places want different image formats: a form that only accepts JPG, a design that needs a transparent PNG, or a website that loads faster with WebP. Convert Image Format switches between them in your browser, including many files at once.

Which format should you choose?

Each format has a job it does best:

  • JPG: photos and anything with smooth color. Small files, universally supported, but no transparency.
  • PNG: screenshots, logos, text and anything that needs a transparent background. Lossless, so files are larger.
  • WebP: modern format for the web. Supports transparency and is usually smaller than both JPG and PNG.

Quality settings

For JPG and WebP output you control quality with a slider (90 percent by default, which looks identical to the original for almost every photo). PNG output is lossless. Converting a JPG to PNG will not restore detail the JPG already lost, and transparent areas become white when converting to JPG.

Batch conversion

Drop several images and they are all converted to the format you pick, then bundled into a single ZIP download. Conversion runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there is no queue.

GIF and BMP files

GIF and BMP images convert to modern formats without any setup, which is useful for old scans, icons and screenshots. An animated GIF is converted from its first frame, because JPG, PNG and WebP output here are still images. BMP files in particular shrink enormously when saved as PNG or WebP.
