NEET UG Photo, Signature and Thumb Impression Size

By · · 4 min read

The NEET (UG) application asks for more files than most exams: a live photograph, a scanned passport size photograph, your signature, a single image of the fingers and thumbs of both hands, and several PDFs such as your Class 10 certificate and marksheet. NTA does not offer a correction for the photograph, signature and impressions, so it pays to get them right the first time.

Here are the limits from the NEET (UG) Information Bulletin and a simple way to prepare each file on your own device, free and without uploading your documents to another website.

The official upload limits

From the NEET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin, paragraph on uploading scanned images (checked on 10 October 2026). The 2027 bulletin may change these numbers, so read it when it is published.

  • Photograph: recent passport size photo, taken on or after 1 January of the exam year, in colour or black and white, white background, 80 percent of the image showing your face (without a mask) with ears visible. JPG or JPEG, 10 KB to 200 KB.
  • Signature: JPG or JPEG, 10 KB to 100 KB.
  • Left and right hand fingers and thumb impressions: JPG or JPEG. The bulletin lists 10 KB to 200 KB in one place and 50 KB to 300 KB in another, so aim for 50 KB to 200 KB, which satisfies both.
  • Class 10 certificate, Class 10 marksheet, category certificate, address proof and PwD or UDID certificate: each a PDF of 50 KB to 300 KB.
  • Identity proof (only if not verifying through Aadhaar or DigiLocker): JPG or JPEG, 10 KB to 200 KB.

Step by step: photo and signature

  1. Use a photo taken this year

NTA asks for a photo taken on or after 1 January of the exam year, and you must use the same photo on your attendance sheet and at counselling, so print copies of the same shot. Convert iPhone HEIC files with HEIC to JPG.

  2. Crop for 80 percent face

In Crop Image, choose 2:3 or Freeform and crop from just above your hair to just below your chin, keeping both ears inside. This is much tighter than an ordinary passport photo.

  3. Resize and compress

Resize to about 350 x 450 pixels with Resize Image, then check the size in Compress Image. Around 85 percent quality usually lands well inside 10 to 200 KB; raise it if the file is under 10 KB. Crop the signature tightly and keep it under 100 KB.

Step by step: fingers and thumb impressions

Press all fingers and the thumb of each hand on white paper with an ink pad, left hand and right hand side by side, and let the ink dry before scanning. Unclear impressions are a stated reason for rejection.

  1. Capture the sheet

Scan the paper, or photograph it flat in daylight from directly above.

  2. Crop and resize

Crop to the area with the impressions using Crop Image, then resize it to about 1200 pixels wide with Resize Image.

  3. Aim for 50 to 200 KB

Compress with Compress Image. If the result is under 50 KB, raise the quality or use a larger size; ridges should be clearly visible when you zoom in.

Step by step: the PDFs

Every PDF has a 50 KB minimum. Crop each document, resize it to about 1400 pixels wide, compress it to roughly 120 to 250 KB, then turn it into a PDF with JPG to PDF. If a PDF comes out under 50 KB, compress the image less and convert again; if it is over 300 KB, compress the image a little more.

Keep spare prints

The bulletin asks candidates to keep 6 to 8 passport size and 4 to 6 postcard size (4 x 6 inch) colour photographs with a white background, identical to the uploaded one, for the exam centre and counselling. Computer generated or edited photos are not accepted, so only crop and resize; do not use beauty filters or background replacement.
