Indian e-Visa Photo and Passport Page Size Rules

By · · 3 min read

The Indian e-Visa application asks for two uploads: a digital photo of you and a scan of your passport's photo page. Each has its own format and size limits, and the application can be rejected if the files are unclear or outside the specification.

Here are the rules from the official Indian visa site and a simple way to prepare both files on your own device, without sending your passport scan to another website first.

The official e-Visa upload rules

From indianvisaonline.gov.in (checked on 10 October 2026). Check the site before you apply, since only the official site decides.

  • Photo format: JPEG.
  • Photo size: minimum 10 KB, maximum 1 MB.
  • Photo shape: height and width must be equal (square).
  • Photo content: full face, front view, eyes open, no spectacles, head centered from top of hair to bottom of chin, plain light or white background, no shadows, no borders.
  • Passport page: the bio page with your photo and details, as a PDF of 10 KB to 300 KB.

Regular visas use different limits

If you are applying for a regular visa (not an e-Visa), the official instructions are stricter: the photo must be a square JPEG of 10 KB to 300 KB, between 350 x 350 and 1000 x 1000 pixels, and supporting documents are PDFs of up to 500 KB. Make sure you follow the rules for the visa you are applying for.

Step by step: the photo

  1. Crop to a square

Open Crop Image, choose the 1:1 preset and center your head with a little space above the hair.

  2. Resize

Open Resize Image and set it to 600 x 600 pixels. That is well inside the e-Visa limits and also works for the regular visa range.

  3. Check the size

Open Compress Image with JPG output. A 600 x 600 photo at around 85 percent quality is normally far below 1 MB and above 10 KB.

Step by step: the passport page PDF

  1. Photograph or scan the bio page

Lay the passport flat in good light and capture the whole photo page, including the machine readable lines at the bottom. Avoid glare on the laminate.

  2. Crop and shrink the image

Crop to the page with Crop Image, resize it to about 1200 pixels wide with Resize Image, then compress it with Compress Image to around 150 to 250 KB, checking that all text is still readable.

  3. Convert to PDF

Turn the image into a PDF with JPG to PDF. The PDF is only slightly larger than the image, so it stays under the 300 KB limit.

Keep your passport scan private

A passport scan is exactly the kind of file you should not upload to random websites. Crop, Resize, Compress Image and JPG to PDF all run in your browser, so the scan stays on your device until you upload it to the official visa site. Shrinking the image before converting also means you never need a server-side PDF compressor.

Frequently asked questions

A square JPEG between 10 KB and 1 MB. A 600 x 600 pixel photo works well.

What size should the passport page PDF be?

Between 10 KB and 300 KB. Shrink the scanned image to about 1200 pixels wide and 150 to 250 KB, then convert it to PDF.

Is the regular Indian visa photo the same?

No. The regular visa photo is a square JPEG of 10 KB to 300 KB and 350 to 1000 pixels on each side. Follow the rules for the visa you are applying for.

Is my passport uploaded when I use these tools?

No. These tools run in your browser, so your photo and passport scan stay on your device until you upload them to the official site.
