How to find and replace text online

Changing a name throughout a document, fixing a repeated typo, or reformatting a list of values takes seconds with find and replace. This tool adds options most text boxes lack, including whole-word matching and full regular expressions with capture groups.

Matching options

Control exactly what counts as a match:

  • Case sensitive: treat Apple and apple as different words.
  • Whole word: replace cat without touching category.
  • Regex: use JavaScript regular expressions for patterns such as all numbers or all email addresses.

Using capture groups

In regex mode, parentheses capture parts of the match and $1, $2 and so on reuse them in the replacement. For example, find (\w+), (\w+) and replace with $2 $1 to turn Smith, Anna into Anna Smith on every line. The Regex Tester helps build and debug patterns first.

Undo and history

Every replacement is logged with an Undo button that restores the text to how it was before that step, so you can experiment safely. Matches are highlighted in real time; very large texts (100,000+ characters) may highlight more slowly. Processing stays in your browser.

Everyday examples

Swap a product or company name after a rebrand, change straight quotes to curly ones, replace tabs with commas to turn pasted columns into CSV, remove double spaces after full stops, or add a prefix to every line with a regex that matches the start of each line.
