How to convert text to speech online

Listening to text helps you proofread, rest your eyes, learn pronunciation, or get through reading while doing something else. Text to Speech reads any text aloud using the speech voices built into your browser and device, with no account and no usage limits.

Where the voices come from

The tool uses the Web Speech API, which is built into modern browsers. Available voices depend on your browser and operating system: Chrome, Edge and Safari each provide different sets, and many systems include several languages and accents. Edge on Windows and Safari on macOS and iOS tend to offer the most natural-sounding voices.

Adjusting the delivery

Three controls shape how it sounds:

  • Rate from 0.5x (slow, good for learning) to 2x (fast, good for skimming).
  • Pitch, to make the voice lower or higher.
  • Volume, independent of your system volume.

Great for proofreading

Hearing your writing read back is one of the most effective ways to catch missing words, repeated phrases and clumsy sentences that your eyes skip over. Speech is generated by your browser and operating system rather than by Drible's servers, and your text is never sent to us.

Getting the most natural result

Punctuation shapes the rhythm: commas add short pauses and full stops longer ones, so well-punctuated text sounds more natural. Spell out unusual abbreviations, and try a few voices, because quality varies a lot between them. A rate of around 0.9x often sounds most relaxed.
