How to use Text Diff

  1. Paste the original

Put the first version of your text or code on the left.

  2. Paste the changed version

Put the new version on the right. Differences are found instantly.

  3. Review the changes

Switch between side-by-side, inline and character-level views to see every addition and deletion.

How to compare two texts and find the differences

Spotting what changed between two versions of a contract, an essay, a config file or a block of code is almost impossible by eye. Text Diff compares them line by line and highlights every addition, deletion and change, right in your browser.

Three ways to view differences

Pick the view that suits the job:

  • Side by side: two columns with line numbers, best for reviewing documents.
  • Inline: a unified view with + and - markers, familiar from code reviews and git.
  • Character level: highlights the exact characters that changed, ideal for catching a single altered digit or typo.

Comparing code and data

All views use a monospace font and preserve whitespace, so indentation changes, trailing spaces and swapped lines are visible. That makes it useful for configuration files, JSON, SQL and snippets copied from different environments. Format JSON with the JSON Formatter first so both versions line up.

Confidential text stays private

The comparison runs entirely in your browser using the open-source diff library, so contracts, drafts and source code are never uploaded.

Tips for cleaner comparisons

Paste plain text rather than rich text, so hidden formatting does not show up as differences. If two versions only differ in line wrapping, rewrap both the same way first. For long documents, compare section by section to keep the results easy to review.
