How to use Compress Image

  1. Add your image

Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP image. Compression runs in your browser.

  2. Adjust the quality

Move the quality slider and choose Auto, JPG or WebP output. The preview and new size update as you go.

  3. Download the smaller file

See exactly how much you saved. If the result would be bigger, you are offered the original instead.

How to compress an image and reduce its file size

Smaller images make web pages load faster, fit under email and upload limits, and save space on your phone. Compress Image re-encodes JPG, PNG and WebP pictures at a quality you choose, usually cutting the file size by half or more with no visible difference.

Finding the right quality

Between 70 and 90 percent quality, most people cannot tell the compressed image from the original, while the file shrinks dramatically. Below about 50 percent you may start to see blocky artifacts around edges and in smooth gradients like skies. The live preview lets you check before you download.

JPG, WebP and PNG

The output format matters as much as the quality setting:

  • JPG is supported everywhere and is ideal for photos.
  • WebP is typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at the same visual quality and works in all modern browsers.
  • PNG is lossless and has no quality setting, so PNGs are converted to JPG or WebP to make them smaller. Keep PNG (and skip compression) for images that need transparency.

Compress or resize?

If a photo is 4000 pixels wide but will be shown at 1200, resizing it first with Resize Image saves far more than compression alone. For the smallest files, resize to the display size, then compress.

Private by design

Compression happens in your browser with the Canvas API. Your images are never uploaded, so it is safe for personal photos and screenshots with sensitive information.
